Dr. James Hurley was unanimously appointed as the 16th President of Tarleton State University in August 2019 by The Texas A&M System Board of Regents. His leadership has propelled Tarleton to new heights of academic excellence, research innovation, and community impact.

• Master's degree from Indiana University
• Bachelor's degree from the University of Pikeville
• Completed the Institute for Presidential Leadership at Harvard University
• Certificate of higher education management from Vanderbilt University

As a first-generation college graduate and the grandson of coal miners, Dr. Hurley understands the transformative power of education and advocates tirelessly for educational access and opportunity for all students.

Under Dr. Hurley's leadership, Tarleton State has:

• Increased enrollment by 25%, becoming one of the fastest-growing public universities in the U.S.
• Raised nearly $150 million in a comprehensive capital campaign
• Increased research expenditures by 67%
• Achieved "Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity" status from Carnegie Classification
• Transitioned to NCAA Division I status
• Launched innovative programs such as the President's Excellence in Research Scholars (PERS) and the Institute for Rural Economic Development and Research

Dr. Hurley's strategic plan, Tarleton Forward 2030, aims to position the university as the premier comprehensive public university in the nation. His focus on innovation, research, and community engagement continues to drive Tarleton's growth and impact.

Dr. Hurley and his wife, Kindall, are the proud parents of four children: sons Drew and Carter, and daughters Blayklee and Brooklyn.
